Expect higher electricity charges in PH this June

by

As if electricity charges are not relatively higher during the summer season, consumers will be charged with higher electricity bills in June as the Energy Regulatory Commission approved a new feed-in tariff allowance.

The ERC greenlighted an increase of 18.3 centavos per kilowatt-hour in the FIT-All for the month of June, up from the provisionally approved rate of 12.4 centavos per kWh in consumer bills.

ERC initially implemented an increase to 12.4 centavos per kWh in FIT-All charges in January, which prompted Meralco and other distribution utilities nationwide to collect an additional 4.06 centavos per kWh.

ERC said the increase will be used to pay feed-in tariff backlogs.

The Philippine Star reported that the increase will cover the unpaid P6.6 billion to renewable energy developers under the FIT system and P230 million in late payment interests.

“If the FIT-All rate is not adjusted, the lag could increase…thereby increasing the late payment interest that needs to be paid to renewable energy developers,” ERC said.

FIT-All is a component in monthly electricity bills that covers payments to renewable energy investors to develop wind, solar, biomass and hydropower projects.
