DPWH builds barricade in Nueva Ecija bus crash site that killed 36 people

by

After a month since the much-publicized bus tragedy that claimed the lives of 33 people and injured 36 others, The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is now making measures to ensure road safety on the ’killer’ mountain highway.

A 180-meter extended wall is now being built near Barangay Capintalan along the 80-meter gorge where the overloaded Leomarick Trans bus nosedived.

“We are making it a continuous concrete barrier, instead of the original design [for a series of wall segments] that used to have gaps in between. The barrier will be anchored on a slope protection wall to make it stronger,” explained DPWH director for Central Luzon Antonio Molano Jr.

The 2.5 million barrier is DPWH’s response to the growing road safety concerns regarding the steep highway connecting the Nueva Vizcaya and Nueva Ecija provinces which resulted in the bus tragedy earlier in April.

DPWH’s operation comes after safety engineers assessed that a barricade could have prevented Leomarick bus from going off the mountain ridge in the first place.
