Explainer: Why fresh grads must not “tambay” after college

Four years in college is no easy thing, especially for those who had a fair share of terror professors in college, or burned the midnight oil to finish with flying colors.

Plenty of newly minted members of the workforce might think they could easily grasp success after being under the belt of their schools and parents. But it doesn’t work that way. Graduates might have been finally freed from studying day in and day out, but the hunt for a decent job can be alluded to passing through the eye of a needle, as parents often say.

Yes, brain cells also need rest, but when resting all day becomes a habit, it could be hard to break it.

I, however, am a different case. A few days after graduation, I immediately looked for a job. Fortunately, I was hired for a job that fits my degree.

The quest for the position is not easy, though. From fifteen applicants, six were shortlisted for the interview and only three got the job. And I was lucky to be one of them.

Do I have regrets for not taking a short vacation? Not really. While there are valid grounds too for taking a short break, I believe the benefits are much more valuable.

Here are some reasons why you should immediately apply for a job right after graduation.

1. Competition is real
I knew that I am not the only graduate of my chosen field this year. I have thousands of competitors from other universities, which means less than 1 percent chance to get in the job that really I want. Delay your application and the possibility might just get even lower, as early birds might have just had the worm.

2. You’ve had enough vacation
Seriously, you’ve had a lot of summer and holiday breaks throughout your college life. It would not hurt so much to deny yourself this one.

3. Too much break can dry your drive
Fresh graduates are full of ideas and fresh abilities. We’ve been holding it back for several years, and giving it a shot in the real world is a must try. Working immediately also lets you test your strengths and weaknesses. Taking a long break, on the other hand, might just dry up your drive and knowledge of the course you chose.

4. Saving money is at hand
Who doesn’t want to save money? Having a job can finally make you financially independent and can help you give back to whoever helped supplied your needs in your studies. Not having a job means additional allowance to those who support you.

5. You can attract employers
Too much vacation can work against you during job interviews. It might look like you are either too choosy for a job or you are too idle. But you can use your desire to immediately start working to impress your interviewee and encourage him or her to hire you.
