Woman speaks up on discrimination against Visayan bar topnotchers

There have been a surge of discrimination online against Visayan people who passed the recent Bar exams in the Philippines. But for Visayan Rachel Amestoso, there has to be someone who speaks up.

Amestoso shared her sentiments over “extreme” discrimination against Visayans in a Facebook post.

“Let me put this here, because discrimination against Bisaya people has gone *** extreme,” Amestoso said in the beginning of her post.

“People say the results of the recent bar exam smell fishy. People say it’s impossible that no one from those who placed in the top 10 came from a Luzon-based university,” she continued.

She lamented over the situation of Bisaya people in the country, whom she said are often perceived as dumb.

“I know where this is coming from…People from the Visayas were always portrayed in the television as dumb and ridiculous and can do nothing more than being a mere house helper. People made fun of our language, people made fun of our speech,” she said.

Instead of posting negative comments, she said Filipinos should just be happy at the performance of Visayan schools.

“Kailangan Tagalog lang ang magaling?” (Should Tagalogs be the only ones who perform well?) she asked clarifying that many people from Luzon take part in such divisive perceptions against Visayans. (Should Tagalogs be the only ones who perform well?)
