US, UK, Canada fear potential terrorist attack, kidnapping in Palawan

The Armed Forces of the Philippines continues to provide tightened security and monitoring in Palawan, following the US Embassy’s pronouncement that it has received “credible information” on terrorists’ plan to kidnap foreigners in the area.

AFP spokesperson Col. Edgard Arevalo said the authorities have not tracked any “specific threat” to Palawan, but will continue to take all reports seriously.

“Whether there is a threat or not, our position is we take all reports seriously. We keep our monitoring and vigilance, and are taking all precautions”, the Inquirer quoted Arevalo as saying.

In a travel advisory released Wednesday, the US Embassy advised its citizens to take measures when visiting Palawan, including the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.

The embassies of the UK and Canada have also issued guidance.

The UK reminded its citizens to “carefully consider travel plans and exercise heightened vigilance in these areas”, the statement reads.

Canada, meanwhile, warned against “elevated threat of kidnapping.”
