Fisherman tells true story behind fish with “tattoo”

Photos of a fish supposedly with a “tattoo” easily went viral in social media after it was posted on Friday, May 5.

The fish in the photo, a blue marlin, had detailed designs in its skin, which was initially thought to be caused by printed plastic in the waters.

But fisherman Zosimo Tano, who caught the fish, revealed the true story behind the photos when he learned it made the news.

He said the supposed “tattoo” were from his shirt, which he used to cover the fish.

“It has no tattoo. I never thought that the print of what I used to cover would embed on the fish skin,” Tano said in an ABS-CBN News report.

The fish costs P180 per kilo, he said.

According to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), the “tattoo” in the skin of the fish could have been caused by a chemical reaction between the fish’s skin and the print of his shirt.

“That chemical reaction should be subject for further studies,” it said.
