Social Media 101: What not to share online

The online world has been a mix of boon and bane, with other saying technology is but a tool. Users are ultimately the ones deciding whether or not the Internet can be a force of good or evil in their lives.

Privacy and bullying issues have surfaced as part of the negative effects of a more connected world.

To avoid even more damage, take note of some things you should avoid sharing via your social media accounts.

1) Relational problems

Never air your relationship problems online. Sharing to your online circle what’s been bothering you instead of directly to the person involved causes more damage than good to your relationship. Your social media connections can rarely give you advice that can wholly solve the problem, as they are not aware of the side of the other person involved.

2) Vague call-outs on other people’s behavior

Expressing your disgust of someone online, with the defense that that someone was left anonymous anyway, is a coward’s cop-out. It is childish and smacks of passive-aggressiveness. Call him or her out on the behavior instead, especially if it is already causing harm to others. There is always a way to tell things lovingly.

3) What you ate for all your meals today

We get it, you’re rich. But posting photos of your meals from morning till night simply causes your other working friends to moon over that extra snack in between meals. You are ruining someone else’s diet. Stop this now!

4) Personal details

This is basic. Never share your insurance, bank account, passport, place of residence, and other personal details that hackers can use to sabotage you. The same goes to passwords for your accounts.

5) Each nitty gritty update on your daily life

Keep some things private. Social media is supposed to connect us to a million other but not take away our zest to live life fully in the present.
