PH Church favors admin’s proposal to appoint barangay officials

Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos who is also the chairman of the CBCP Commission on Migrants and Itinerant People, expressed his support regarding the national government’s plan that the Church, as well as, other groups will be consulted in choosing the appointed leaders of the barangays.

This move came after reports that President Duterte has again moved to postpone the election of barangay leaders because of rampant reports that some of the incumbent barangay captains are involved in illegal drugs in their areas.

With the deferment, the President reiterated that he the barangay captains to just be appointed, through the recommendation of the Church leaders and other respected individuals and groups.

“That is very good and interesting suggestion. Here we can have effective partnership with the government, the Manila Bulletin quoted the Bishop as saying.” “When people see that our government and church are working hand in hand, cooperating with one another for the common good of the country, they will be inspired and encouraged to unite themselves for our country’s progress and peace. We in the Diocese support this effort and we will collaborate.”

Lawmakers are currently divided regarding the matter.
