Typhoon Nina weakens into severe tropical storm

Typhoon Nina has weakened into a severe tropical storm on Tuesday morning as it continued to move away from the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

Nina is already 440 kilometers west of Iba, Zambales, Rappler quoted state weather bureau PAGASA as saying.

It is moving west southwest at 17 kilometers per hour (km/h) and is expected to leave the PAR on Tuesday night, the report said. Nina now has maximum winds of up to 105 km/h and gustiness of up to 130 km/h.

There are no more areas under tropical cyclone warning signals.

Typhoon Nina left houses damaged, posts toppled, and many people stranded in provinces in Southern Luzon, reported Unang Balita.

In Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, houses and market stalls were wiped out by the typhoon’s heavy rains and strong winds. Some parts of the city were also flooded.

Motorists had to find alternate routes as electric posts blocked some roads.

In Banton, Romblon, meanwhile, roads were obstructed by uprooted trees. No one was reported injured in the town, the report said.

In Allen, Northern Samar, bad weather halted sea travel and many passengers were stranded at ports.

Typhoon Nina first made landfall in Catanduanes on Sunday, Christmas Day. It made succeeding landfalls in Sagñay, Camarines Sur; Verde Island, Batangas; Tingloy, Batangas; Calatagan, Batangas; and Lubang Island, Occidental Mindoro, reported GMA News.
