Chocolate fans outraged by new Toblerone chocolates

While the Filipinos are divided over the Marcos burial and the Americans are protesting against Trump, the British are also facing a crisis. It’s not the aftermath of Brexit but the new Toblerone chocolates.

The maker of Toblerone Swiss chocolate has widened the spaces in some of its iconic, triangle-array bars, offering about 10 percent less product for the same price.

“The shape of the bar may have looked like the Swiss Alps before, now it’s a bit more Holland,” said British consumer Tony Mathews.

Some British consumers likened the new shape to a toothless comb, others to the mouth of a crocodile.

The maker of Toblerone, Mondelez, says the move—which affects products globally, though mainly in Britain—was necessary to cope with higher prices for ingredients.

The British are not alone, however. Dubai residents are also not happy with the changes made in their favourite chocolate bar.

Here’s what they have to say on Twitter:

@SIGaladari: Ok in all honesty I saw the whole #Trump thing coming but #Toblerone …we weren’t prepared!

@richardupshall: Potentially most important event in the last 4 years happening as #electionday arrives, also trending #toblerone I give up #MarmiteGate

@Viraj_Ko: Still dont know what to worry about #Toblerone shape change or #USElection2016 results… Also got a few thousand rupees that are worthless.

@DarkRangerN: And this is my favorite chocolate! Pretty upsetting! #Toblerone

For many, the Toblerone is linked to travel—a gift purchased at the airport before boarding a plane home—though it is increasingly available in supermarkets and shops.
