DFA pledges aid for kin of OFW killed in NY subway

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs has assured assistance to the family of the Filipina killed in New York City last November 7 after she was allegedly shoved into the path of an approaching subway train.

Outgoing foreign affairs spokesman and assistant secretary Charles Jose said the Philippine consulate in New York would help the family of 49-year-old Connie Watton of Queens, reported Manila Bulletin.

Jose is yet to disclose the details surrounding Watton’s death, saying he has yet to see the consulate’s report.

Various international news agencies reported that another woman, identified as Melanie Liverpool, pushed Watton onto the tracks of Times Square Station where a subway train was approaching, instantly killing the Filipina.

Accounts from some witnesses reportedly said the two were arguing on the platform prior to the incident.

Authorities arrested Liverpool, who allegedly suffered from schizophrenia, and is now held without bail.

Watton reportedly worked as housekeeper for the family of billionaire and Blackstone Group CEO Stephen Schwarzman.

His children, Teddy and Elizabeth, expressed shock over Watton’s death, foreign reports say.

Teddy described the Filipina housekeeper as “one of the best people in the world” in his Facebook post, the New York Post reported.

“There aren’t really words for something like this. Connie was the sweetest, nicest, most caring woman I’ve ever met, who only did good with her life and our family was blessed to have had time with her.”
