Man caught smuggling marijuana in cake at Dubai airport

Dubai, UAE – a 23-year-old Iranian was caught with six pieces of cake which contained marijuana and eight poppy seeds at the Dubai airport last Sunday, October 30.

The suspect denied charges of smuggling and possessing drugs. “The cakes and the seeds were gifts to friends of mine here,” he told Dubai Criminal Court. “I didn’t know the cakes had marijuana in them,” he was quoted by The National.

The Court of First Instance convicted him and ordered him to pay Dh50,000 worth of fine. He will be deported after fulfilling the terms of the court’s ruling.

The defendant’s arrest was made by the customs inspectors on March 31. He was then referred to the anti-narcotics officers.

The Crime Lab’s report showed the marijuana, seized from the accused by the customs inspectors, weighed 314.2 grams.

The court ordered that the seized drugs be confiscated. The conviction remains subject to appeal.
