TFT Engr of the year recounts challenging path to success

DUBAI: For Francis Anthony Ayan, TFT Engineer of the Year Awardee, receiving such a commendation is indeed a huge honor and something that he will treasure for the rest of his life. “I didn’t expect the award at all since I was competing against other two nominees who also deserved to win.

This award somehow put me in the spotlight especially here in the UAE and I am thankful to The Filipino Times for recognizing what I have done so far in my career,” Ayan said. He added, “I would say that my journey was not at all smooth sailing. I’ve also encountered tough challenges like delayed salary. In fact, some have still been left unpaid. I did the rounds of applying for overseas jobs too, when I was in the Philippines where placement fees and salary loans were the norm.”

Ayan said gaining the coveted Chartered Professional Engineer (CPE) career title in New Zealand was the turning point of his life. “It is a reflection of my competence. It simply means I am a fully-equipped engineer not only by degree but by practice and experience.

CPE is also recognized in the international scene which gives me the edge over other professional engineers. My journey to attain it was not easy as I went through a series of panel interview and worked hard to be able to submit an impressive career portfolio,” he said. Ayan said working in the engineering industry is not easy. “So set your career goals, either long- or short-term and stick to them.

Being an engineer is not just passing the board exam, you are designing and building things.” He added, “Do not be afraid to showcase the good things that you’ve done but be sure you don’t blow your horns that much.”
