Transgender Filipino leader joins list of world’s powerful women

MANILA: Filipino politician Geraldine Roman, who made history in the Philippines after being elected as the first ever Pinay transgender congresswoman, now shares a spot with the world’s power women like Hillary Clinton, Beyonce, and Simone Biles.

The congresswoman of the 1st District of Bataan was included in the list of inspiring female leaders released by Motto magazine — which is overseen by the same editors who produce TIME magazine, reported Coconuts Manila.

Motto’s target readers are young women who are “looking for advice about life, work, and play,” the report said, adding that the list of inspiring leaders was released in celebration of International Day of the Girl, a United Nations initiative campaign for greater gender equality worldwide.

“Recognizing our rights and dignity will in no way diminish yours. We are not asking for special privileges or extra rights. We simply ask for equality. With inclusiveness and diversity, our nation has so much to gain,” Roman, who has been campaigning for LGBT rights before she was elected, was quoted as saying by Coconuts Manila.
