‘Guilt-free’ shopping for Pinoys

DUBAI: Overseas Filipinos have a great relationship with sale events, so much so the some even consider it an obligation to check out a sale event for the care boxes they send back home; others are just plain shopaholics.

According to Barney Almazar, Gulf Law director, Filipinos’ love for sale is something that can be tolerated.

In his App, TheWealthyFilipinoMigrants.Com, he encourages those who cannot control their urge to shop to at least be conscious spenders.

“The objective in tracking your spending is to save and still be able to splurge. That is guilt-free shopping,”  Almazar, who is also active with his financial literacy advocacies said.

He added that frugality is not about cutting the spending on everything. It is, he said, choosing the things you need and enjoying enough to spend extravagantly on, then cutting costs mercilessly on the things that you don’t need.

While there are cons, there are pros as well.

Just recently, over 80% off on international brands were rolled out at the The Big Clearance Sale in DWTC which took place on Sept. 1-3, 2016. It was a sold out!

“I wait for these kinds of sale because items are almost as good as free. Imagine, I bought a Juicy Couture furry coat for Dh99; it originally cost Dh 1900,” Karla Caagusan, a teacher said.

Also, during the Philippine Property and Investment Exhibition (PPIE) at JW Marriott Deira on Sept. 23 and 24, 2016, Concept Big Brands Group  sold 70% of their on-site items.

“I wasn’t planning of buying anything, but how can you not? Issey Miyake which cost Dh 580 per bottle is sold at Dh 175? That’s a huge discount and that’s the reason why we can’t avoid buying from sale events. It is practical, some Filipinos just overdo it,” Mikaela Seyo, fashion blogger who attended the property event said.

International American fashion brand, Nine West which also holds a series of sales throughout the year, is yet again holding a flat 40 % off on all items this coming long weekend.

A spokesperson at Nine West  Arabia said they are currently replenishing stocks to mark the coming of the winter season and having the items marked down is an eye candy to shoppers especially those who’d want to do their early holiday shopping.

From September 28 till October 2, shoppers can save up to 40% off from the wide range of shoes, handbags and accessories at Nine West.
