Comelec urges 15-year-olds to register as voters

MANILA: Filipino youths, who will turn 15 years old by Oct. 23, 2017, must participate in the upcoming voter registration for the Sangguniang Kabataan elections, the Philippine Commission on Elections (Comelec) has said.

Filipinos who are at least 15 but not over 30 years old on the day of the SK polls may register as voters, GMA News quoted Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez as saying.

Jimenez reportedly clarified however that those who already registered as voters last July need not re-register.

“Their registration records will still be included in the SK database except those who will be 31 years old on October 23, 2017,” he was quoted as saying.

Those who meet the following requirements qualify as voters for the SK polls: 15-30 years of age; and are residents of the barangay where vote will be cast for at least six months before Election Day.

Some 1,614,695 voters aged 15-17  registered for the SK elections last July 15 to 30. The poll body is expecting about two million voters to register in the upcoming registration period.

Registration will reportedly resume on Monday, Oct. 3, and will end on April 29, 2017.

Schedule of registration will be from Mondays to Saturdays, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., including holidays except for Nov. 1December 24 and 25, Dec. 31, 2016; and Jan. 1, and April 13 and 14, 2017 at the Office of the Election Officer at Comelec offices.

The SK polls will be held on Oct. 23, 2017, reported GMA News.
