No street butchers for animal sacrifices, Dubai municipality warns

DUBAI – Due to health and environmental risks which could be tied to the practice, Dubai municipality warns residents to not using street butchers for their animal sacrifices during Eid Al Adha next week.

With the upcoming festival of Eid El Adha to start on September 12 – only a week to go – Ali Taher Al Hammadi, head of the municipality’s abattoirs section, urged people to slaughter sacrificial animals such as goats, sheep, cows, bulls and camels at official abattoirs.

“We want to make sure that the process runs smoothly, that people are being safe and that they do not have long to wait for their turn,” the National quoted him as saying.

Al HAmmadi said temporary abattoirs had been set up in Al Khawaneej and Al Quoz, along with a new hall in Al Qusais, which had a capacity of 300 animals an hour.

The temporary slaughterhouses will be open to the public from next Monday morning and, in the evening, will be open to charities. Other Dubai slaughterhouses are available in Hatta and Al Lasili. Temporary slaughterhouses will be open until the third day of Eid Al Adha.

According to Dr. Zohal Al Basheer, also of the abattoirs section, said that the animals in Dubai Municipality abattoirs were monitored and healthy. “There are risks of diseases if a person is to use the street butchers.”

Eid Al Adha’s tradition of slaughtering animals for sacrificial purposes commemorates the mercy of Allah when he spared the prophet Ibrahim from having to kill his son Ishmael by having the boy replaced with a goat.
