Pinoy chess masters to promote board game in Filipino schools in UAE

DUBAI: The Philippine Consulate General (PCG) is holding talks with Filipino Chess Players League (FCPL), a group of Filipino veteran chess players, for the promotion of the mental board game among the youths in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, media reports said.

The PCG-FCPL project aims to bring chess to Philippine schools in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, as the board game heightens one’s intellectual prowess, Gulf Today quoted Consul General Paul Raymund Cortes as saying.

Cortes, at an event, also introduced two senior masters scheduled to compete at the Aug.21 to 29 “Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival”, adding that the two Philippine representatives who personally applied for the competitions in the UAE on their own, are Oliver Dimakiling, 30, and Haridas Pascua, 23.

They will be competing at the tournament along with FCPL officers and members Danny Reyes, Larry Dolor, Archer Piscos and Gilbert Pascua. Gilbert an OFW in Dubai, is the father of Haridas. Father and son are from Baguio City in Northern Philippines.

Dimakiling and the younger Pascua are up and running for the 17th and 18th grandmasters of the Philippines, Dolor was quoted as saying.

Their participation in Abu Dhabi comes after internationally-acclaimed grandmaster Wesley So won in St Louis, Missouri a few days ago. Dolor is looking forward to the PCG-FCPL tie-up claiming that this will be a boost to the growing interest of Filipinos in chess, reported Gulf Today.
