Italy’s “The Floating Piers” amaze thousands on opening day

ITALY: Thousands local and foreign tourists, literally walked on water in Italy, as the country opened its newest attraction, The Floating Piers, to the public.

The 4.5-kilometer walkway was created by a Bulgarian artist with an art installation made up of 220,000 floating pontoons covered in 70,000 meters of shimmering orange-yellow fabric, reported ABS-CBN News.

The project was completed after two years costing $17 million.

On its opening day, and despite a forecast of thunderstorms and the threat of closure, over 10,000 tourists arrived to experience walking on the water.

The Philippine government estimates some 271,000 Filipinos live and work in Italy. Some of them have already acquired Italian citizenship.
