Filipino students lost belongings in West Virginia flood

WEST VIRGINIA: Seven Filipino students lost all their belongings including travel documents, in the devastating West Virginia flood that claimed the lives of 24 people and left hundreds homeless.

Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Spokesman Charles Jose confirmed the students were on-the-job trainees from the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB), ABS-CBN News reported.

“The Philippine Embassy in Washington evacuated the students to a safer area after floods swept the house where they were staying,” said Jose.

Up to 10 inches of rain fell on the mountainous state on Thursday, sending torrents of water from rivers and streams through homes and causing widespread devastation.

President Barack Obama had since declared West Virginia a major disaster area and ordered federal aid to affected individuals in Kanawha, Greenbrier and Nicholas counties, according to media reports.
