8M OFWs in Saudi Arabia safe, says Philippine envoy

MANILA: Even as diplomatic ties between Saudi Arabia and Iran had hit a new low, the Philippine Ambassador in Saudi Arabia has said that the situation in the Kingdom was normal, and that the over 800,000 overseas Filipino workers there were safe.

“Normal pa rin ang sitwasyon dito sa Riyadh, sa ibang city ng Saudi Arabia. Mino-monitor po namin closely pero, so far, wala namang danger, wala namang kahit anong insidente,” Philippine Ambassador to Riyadh Ezzedin Tago was quoted as saying by Journal.

“Galing lang po ako kahapon sa mall sa Al Khobar at Damman malapit sa eastern region pero wala namang tension,” Tago added.

Filipino expatriates in Saudi Arabia increased to 852,000 in 2015, from over 722,000 in 2014, the Department of Foreign Affairs reportedly said.

Tago added that there a lot of employment opportunities for medical, and household workers in Saudi.

The DFA stressed that contingency plans are in place to secure the safety of the OFWs should the security situation in Saudi Arabia and Iran warrants the evacuation of Filipinos, the Journal reported.
