Preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics are underway.
Months before the much-anticipated world sporting event, the public was given a sneak peak of the Olympic medal designs athletes from different parts of the world are set to receive.
Dubbed as the Tokyo 2020 medal project, the group collected 80,000 tons of mobile phones and small electronic devices in Japan and used it to create the gold, silver and bronze medals for the sporting event.
The group said there were about 5,000 medals created for the Olympics and Paralympics respectively.
Some six million mobile phones were used to create the medals, according to a Japanese network report.
About 158 million pounds of donated electronics were reduced to 71 pounds of gold, 7,700 pounds of silver and 4,850 pounds of gold, the report said. (TN)
