Andresscu stuns Williams to win US Open women’s title

Canadian Bianca Andresscu is now $3.85 million richer.

The 19-year-old lass pocketed the top purse in the US Open after she defeated Serena Williams in their championship match, 6-3, 7-5, at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

Seeded number 15, Andreescu collared her first Grand Slam title while foiling Williams’ attempt to win a record-tying 24 major titles.

“Being able to play on this stage against Serena, a true legend in this sport, is amazing,” Andreescu said in a report from ESPN. “Oh, man, it wasn’t easy at all.”

Williams has made to the finals four times in the past six Grand Slam events but dropped 0-4 in those matches to remain stuck on 23 major wins in her quest to tie Margaret Court’s all-time record, the espn.com report added.

“Bianca played an unbelievable match. … It was incredible tennis out there,” said Williams, who was making her 33rd appearance in a Grand Slam final. “I just wish I could have played better.”

Andreescu wasn’t even born when Williams won the first of her six US Open titles in 1999. She matched Monica Seles (1990) for the women’s record by winning her first major in only her fourth Grand Slam event.

Williams was playing in her 10th final (and 102nd career match) — at the US Open alone.
