For the first time ever in the US Open, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will be playing against each other.
Williams and Sharapova, who are former US Open champions and two of the biggest stars in women’s tennis, are due for an opening-round matchup for the final major of the year.
The two tennis stars battled in the finals of the other three majors and the 2012 Olympics but have never played each other in the US Open.
Williams led the head-to-head matchup, 19-2, but the lopsided statistics won’t make their upcoming duel less interesting.
Sharapova won the 2006 US Open championship and beat Williams in the final of Wimbledon two years before that title run.
Sharapova, however, has never been the same since winning the 2006 US Open but remains one of the most popular players among fans in New York.
