OFW mom shares insights on nurturing her kid’s gift of perfect pitch

Mothers all over the world only wish for their kids to get the best of what life has to offer – especially as they envision their kids growing up and living their own lives in the future. This is why they do all they can to nurture their children in their development stages, but the challenge adds on for mothers with children of determination.

In the case of Mylene De Guzman, she, together with her husband Richard managed to find a silver lining within her child of determination, Lawrence – as they discovered that he had the gift of perfect pitch through music therapy. “As we noticed his great interest in music, his father taught him to play the piano at 11 years old; we discovered something bigger that he is gifted with a ‘perfect pitch’ – a rare musical talent that every musician wishes to have,” shared De Guzman.

The Career of being a Mom

She also shares that being working her day job and being a mother entails that she requires strict time management, team support from her home, and loads of patience: “As a mum, it’s one of toughest responsibilities as there’s no end but that was nothing compared to how we have to find ways to make things as normal as it can possibly be; to say that raising a child of determination is a monumental task is a understatement, it’s a career of its own – need to learn so many things other than the usual stuff that a mother does and loads of issues to deal with.”

She has since learned that spending precious time together with your kids will allow you to look beyond their pre-existing conditions to bring forth their talent. “Be more observant with their skills because in the end it is only us, parents, who can bring out the extraordinary capabilities of our children with this condition.”

Shaping your kids’ future

As an OFW of more than 20 years here in the UAE, she thanks the country for being a conducive environment for inclusivity and growth especially for children of determination. “Being an expat mother of a child of determination – I strongly believe that the acceptance we are enjoying in the society stems from the good seed that the late father of this nation Sheikh Zayed has planted. So in my 21 years of being in the UAE, I see that this country became my second home,” shares De Guzman.

She also shares that mothers should look into transforming each challenge in a positive light. “As a mom, I have learned and developed that trait to convert negative situations into a positive learning opportunity. Find your motivations by creating a deeper meaning and understanding of why you are doing these sacrifices for your family,” said De Guzman.
