Ramadan dress code: What to wear in UAE during the holy month

Ramadan in the UAE is regarded as the most cherished month of the predominantly Muslim country as majority of the nation fasts and prays together for around 29-30 days.

Non-Muslims are advised to practice tolerance by being more patient and understanding towards Muslim brothers and sisters during this holy month, and apart from not eating and/or drinking in public, another notable consideration is your clothing.

Dress Conservatively

The general rule of thumb is both men and women should wear clothing that covers their shoulders, torso, and be covered up until below the knee.

The official website of Visit Abu Dhabi states that proper Ramadan etiquette in the UAE includes dressing very conservatively in light of the solemn period. Here are their suggestions on what to wear in public view:

Men: Trousers and a shirt

Women: Either long dresses or a conservative top and skirt/trousers

Here are the following clothing items listed that should not be worn as per their advice: No tight trousers, sweaters, blouses or short, low cut tops in public.

Swimwear: Allowed in private beaches of hotels, resorts. However, individuals should be clothed as per above guidelines when heading back to the hotel.

The etiquette guidelines also state that these rules for clothing aren’t just applicable during the Ramadan season; these should be followed all year round as per UAE law. “It is worth noting that while respect and patience are especially appreciated during Ramadan, the above guidelines are actually part of Emirati law and should be followed at all times,” as advised on the official website.

Detention Warning

The advise follows the ruling from the UAE’s Penal Code, specifically Article 358 that states that any indecent act (including inappropriate dress code) reported to the authorities will have the individual jailed for a minimum of six months.  “Shall be sentenced to detention for a minimum term or six months, whoever has flagrantly committed an indecent act,” as per the law.
