Seventy-nine-year-old Tatay Berting’s every day routine is waking up at four in the morning, travels for two hours to Lucena City, Quezon, and beg for alms from the city’s residents — all for his dream casket.
In a feature by ABS-CBN TV show Rated K, Tatay Berting, whose real name is Roberto Arroyo, wakes up early in his hut along the shores of Junisan, Quezon for his routine.
He travels to the city of Quezon province and begs for small money from people there. Tatay Berting said he’s aware that asking for alms is prohibited in the country but he claimed that that as long as he is not hurting or forcing anyone to give him money, there’s nothing wrong with what he’s doing.
A widower for two decades, Tatay Berting has nothing to ask for money as all of his children already have their own families except for one, her daughter Vilma who has mental illness.
Unfortunately, Vilma was raped by unknown people and worse, she became pregnant from it.
As a loving father to her daughter, Tatay Berting is not just begging for the preparation of the end of his life but also for the beginning his future grandchild.
Despite becoming weaker by day, Tatay Berting is still fueled by his daughter and his dream casket.
