Travelling is a leisure activity in its essential meaning. But there are responsibilities that go along when you visit a foreign territory.
Not every country has the same culture. There’s always diversity in terms of tradition and customs, as simple as body actions. No tourist would want to be frowned upon, right?
You want to enjoy the full experience of your trip and be as welcomed by the locals. So it’s a good idea to brush up on travel etiquettes before visiting a place.
1 If the locals are not doing it, then don’t
Try to learn what are the do’s and don’ts in the places you travel to. In Dubai is socially unacceptable for a man to initiate a handshake to a woman. This is especially true among locals and Muslims.
2 Punctuality is the best policy
It’s not just about being able to adjust to the time zones but a gesture of respect as well. Every minute spent late takes away the chance to visit what’s on the itinerary.
It is also important to take note that in some countries, i.e.Japan, punctuality is extra valued. Being prompt means being at the venue at least 10 minutes earlier than expected.
3 Practice the lingo, win a friend
Ever heard of and tried saying, Annyeong haseyo? Travelling gives the opportunity to create interactions, if not lasting friendships, with new people. When you are able to speak the local language, even just the basic greetings, chances are you will receive much friendlier service.
4 Clothing norms
As a tourist you’d want to blend in with the locals, and not necessarily stand out in a negative way. While it’s wise to remind yourself that you also represent the place you come from, one is expected to dress in a conservative manner, where covering shoulders, cleavage, and knees is rule of thumb, especially in the Middle East.
5 Do not mess
Always treat the places you visit as your own and leave your mess to yourself. In other countries, there are stricter rules on littering such in Singapore which is known for its impeccable cleanliness.
