What does it take to get a job?

So, you got your CV all polished with all the trimmings, work experience, certifications and all. But would you know what company human resource officers are interested in?

A recent research by jobs portal, Bayt.com indicated that bright and shining CVs are just part of a holistic approach corporations have taken on when hiring – to include the ability to be a team player and to have grace under pressure.

In fact, 50% of the almost 1,500 respondents to a survey Bayt.com did across industries in the region from May to July this year said being a team player is a required skill; with 46% saying they also see an applicant’s ability to work under pressure as another major plus.

“It’s a very competitive market. Companies have to always be on their toes,” said Vagelyn Federico, HR director at one of the major hotels on Sheikh Zayed Road who also is current international ambassador of the UAE chapter of the United Hoteliers of the Philippines (UHP).

Meantime, the Bayt.com report also noted that good communication skills in Arabic and English (59%) emerged as the top skill that employers predictably were looking for – with industries spanning from automotive to fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), healthcare and medical services, information technology, trading and banking.

“Nearly four in 10 respondents stated that they are looking for candidates with managerial skills,” said the report, adding that three in 10 are searching for those with mid-level experience and a quarter, with sales and marketing skills.

In other findings, the report stated that 30% of UAE respondents said they will be hiring in the next three months of which some 118 of them planning to hire up to five people. Small and medium local companies have the highest hiring requirements at 51%.

Line of work open for hiring in the next three months are advertising, marketing and public relations; banking and finance, FMCG, hospitality, recreation and entertainment, IT, e-commerce, manufacturing, as well as oil, gas and petrochemicals.

The Bayt.com report said majority of the companies will be hiring mid-career and junior positions with maximum requirement emerging for junior executives.  Sales executives and project managers are top roles sought after.

The jobs portal said all data was collected online. The total number of successful online interviews achieved was 1,474.
