Heat stroke 101: What you should know

During hot summer days, authorities and emergency personnel are always on the lookout for incidents of heat strokes to save lives.

Dr. Arabelle Berto, a specialist in internal medicine at The Medical City, talked to The Filipino Times and explained what to be on the watch for when venturing into the outdoors during summer.

“Heat stroke happens when ang body temperature mo ay tumaas ng 40Celsius to 41 Celsius. It is a severe form of heat dryness. Ang manifestation ng heat stroke ay unconsciousness or disorientation,” said Dr. Berto.

To stir clear of heat strokes, Dr. Bertos advised that you keep yourself ventilated and that you drink lots of water.

“Heat stroke occurs when your body could not anymore regulate the temperature of the environment. This happens during summer months ‘pag sobra talaga ang init and you are exposed to it,” she added.

Dr. Berto said heat stroke has a lot of complications – “from unconsciousness and kidney failure liver to a decrease in your glucose level which can lead to death.”

“Problems with heat strokes are usually very serious and this should be addressed as soon as possible. Patients should be brought to the hospital immediately,” she said.
