Louvre Abu Dhabi: A taste of Paris culture in UAE

Creation of quality landmark takes time—especially if it means getting a glimpse of everyone’s favorite dream destination without having to spend overwhelmingly on airfare.

After 10 years of construction, The Louvre Abu Dhabi is set to open its doors to visitors on the latter part of November this year to showcase masterpieces from Paris and other locations.

The new Louvre museum was originally scheduled to be unveiled in 2012, but a series of construction setbacks delayed the opening until 2017.

According to the Art Newspaper, sources familiar to the project said the construction phase has reached final stages.

“Most of the construction work has been completed and a number of technical issues that arose have been solved,” the report said.

Among the difficulties encountered during the construction phase were the installation of the mesh-like 12,000-ton, 18-meter-diameter cupola and sealing the building from the seawater.

The establishment alone is a gem as it was designed by Pritzker Prize winner Jean Nouvel, a Pritzker Prize winning architect.

Once completed, the approximately Dh4 billion infrastructure will bring a taste of France and Europe to the UAE with on-loan paintings from Agence France-Museums and the Musee du Louvre in France, including Leonardo Da Vinci’s “La Belle Ferronniere”, Henri Matisse’ pieces, Vincent Van Gogh’s self-portrait, Jacques-Louis David’s “Napoleon Crossing the Alps”, and Claude Monet’s “Gare Saint-Lazare”.

Art Newspaper said the seabound spot, which is an extension of Saadiyat Island, will feature a total of 300 art piece from French museums and 700 collections acquired by the Emirati museum, including photographs, paintings, and sculptures.
