Dubai court jails man for swindling AED 800,000 from 59 jobseekers

A Dubai court ordered 1-year imprisonment of man for conning 59 Asian jobseekers out of AED 800,000.

The Nepali accused, identified as KR in court documents, registered a recruitment agency in November 2020 at an office based on Khalid bin Al Waleed Street in Refaa to con unsuspecting jobseekers of their money.

Each person paid between AED 3,000 to AED 17,000 as per reports from The National. The victims registered a grievance at Al Refaa Police station in January.

The company sought applications from people overseas with a promise to find them a job in the UAE and 59 victims, primarily from Nepal and different Asian international locations, found they had been conned after they gathered on the suspect’s workplace to demand their refund.

“The suspect used to collect an amount of money from the victims to issue visit visas. He used to welcome the victims at the airport and accommodate them in rented places. He kept asking them for more money to finish the recruitment procedure and then asked them to wait,” stated police records.

The suspect admitted to swindling the victims and referred to Dubai Courts for illegally obtaining money from 59 people and was sentenced to one year in jail and fined with AED 807,000.
