President Rodrigo Duterte said he is not supporting any presidential candidates for now as the official campaign season for national candidates kicks off.
In his latest speech to the nation, Duterte said that almost all aspiring presidents had communicated with him seeking his endorsement for the May 2022 polls.
“I may [support one] in the end if my advice and endorsement would help — if needed. But at this time, I am saying I am not supporting anybody — unless there is a compelling reason really for me to change my mind and decide to support a candidate,” Duterte said.
He added that all of those who are running for the country’s top post are qualified.
“I think they are okay, except for a few misgivings about the danger of falling into a trap with the communists,” he said.
Duterte previously endorsed the presidential bid of Senator Bong Go but the latter backed out from the race due to family reasons.
His daughter Sara Duterte used to be the frontrunner in presidential surveys but later on decided to run as Vice President with former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Duterte previously called Marcos Jr. a ‘weak leader’.
