Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon asserted on Sunday that the death of former President Noynoy Aquino III could reshape the 2022 national elections.
Drilon said that Aquino’s legacy of honest governance could be a positive driver against the Duterte administration.
But whether the Aquino legacy could play a huge impact in the upcoming polls solely relies on the electorate.
“Certainly, if it would have an effect, it will be positive for the opposition because people would realize and begin to look inward,” Drilon said in an interview with the Inquirer.
Drilon hopes that Aquino’s death will fuel desire among people to push for the return of decency, dignity and diligence in the government.
On the other hand, Senator Risa Hontiveros told reporters, another opposition lawmaker said: “Talking now about his legacy… because he did so much good while he was our president, the influence of a person like him, the influence of a public service track record like his, will remain heavy and strong.”
“We can use his legacy to do our best, and to enable the widest expanse of our population … to do more good together,” she added.
Aquino died at the age of 61 on June 24 due to renal disease secondary to diabetes. He was the 15th President of the Republic of the Philippines.
