COVID-19 jab makes Filipino richer by Php488,000+ in Guam

The date June 23 turned out to be a lucky day for 71-year-old Filipino Guam resident Petronilo Rodrin, when he won a $10,000 (Php488,585) prize raffled off in the US territory for fully vaccinated individuals against COVID-19.

Rodrin, who hails from Quezon City but has been living 11 years in Guam, was picked in an electronic draw as the winner in the second installment of a 6-week raffle that began June 16.

He had received his first shot of the Moderna vaccine on Jan. 12, and the second dose on Feb. 10.

His son Aaron Rodrin told ABS-CBN News that his father had retired after working in Hotel Nikko in Guam.

Guam, which has thousands of Filipino residents, had launched the “Vax N’ Win” incentive program in June to achieve 80 per cent herd immunity against COVID-19 in its adult population by July 21—its 76th Liberation Day.

While the total cost of prizes amounts to $250,000, a brand new car is the other major prize in the program, aside from several other rewards being given away every Wednesday for six weeks for people aged 18 and above.

By June 21, COVID-19 reported cases were 8,304, of which 8,049 were confirmed and 69 cases are active. (AW)
