A dog stranded on ice in the arctic sea received a new lease on life after it was rescued by Russian sailors in the autonomous Yamal-Nenets region.
A video taken by the sailors highlighted a fluffy white dog stranded on the cracked Arctic sea ice, while they whistled to save it. The one-year-old animal named Aika was a Samoyed breed of herding dogs, that had strayed far from her village before being spotted by the sailors in the ice-breaker ship.

Footage released by regional authorities showed the dog walking with a limp as her paws were lacerated by the ice. When the dog ate cookies thrown to her before climbing the ramp aboard the vessel, the sailors used mobile communications to locate Aika’s owner and put her on a hovercraft to her village, where she was reunited with her master.
The icebreaker’s crew has also saved other lives in the past. They rescued two snowmobilers when their vehicle fell through the ice at the Gulf of Ob in December last year, according to the Moscow Times. (AW)
