Mrs. Sri Lanka World 2021 took a shocking turn when this year’s winner, Pushpika De Silva, was stripped of her title right after her ‘first walk’.
The unpleasant scene happened when the previous year’s winner, Caroline Jurie, went back to the stage after crowning De Silva.
On national TV on Sunday, Jurie claimed that De Silva ‘violated’ the pageant’s rule that only married woman can join. After her ‘revelation’ that De Silva was a divorcee, she forcibly removed the crown from the winner’s head, awarding it to the runner-up instead.
“There is a rule that we all have to be married and not divorced, so I’m taking the first step saying that the crown goes to the first runner up,” Jurie said.
After the shocking moment, De Silva’s was seen rushing off the stage in tears.
The crown was later returned to Mrs De Silva after pageant organizers confirmed that she was not a divorcee, BBC reported.
The organizer has also apologized to De Silva who said she’s separated but not divorced.
“We are disappointed,” Chandimal Jayasinghe, head of Mrs. Sri Lanka World, told BBC.
“It was a disgrace how Caroline Jurie behaved on the stage and the Mrs. World organisation has already begun an investigation on the matter.”
