The Philippines has detected the first case of the coronavirus variant from the United Kingdom on Wednesday.
“Following strengthened surveillance and border control efforts, the Department of Health (DOH) and the Philippine Genome Center today confirm the detection of the B.1.1.7 Sars-COV 2 (UK Variant) in the country,” the DOH said in a statement.
The patient is a male resident of Quezon City who departed for Dubai on December 27, 2020 for business purposes and arrived in the Philippines last January 7, 2021 via Emirates Flight No. EK 332.
The patient was swabbed and quarantined in a hotel upon arrival. The patient was also accompanied by his female partner but tested negative for the virus. She is now undergoing strict quarantine protocols.
Both of the passengers said that they had no exposure to COVID-19 positive individuals and had no travel activities outside Quezon City.
The DOH called on other passengers of Emirates Flight No. EK 332 to contact their respective Barangay Health Emergency Response Teams (BHERTs).
“Immediate contact tracing was done w/ QC gov’t & initially identified contacts are asymptomatic & currently under strict home quarantine. DOH also secured the flight manifest of the flight in question and contact tracing of other passengers is now underway,” the statement added. (TDT)
