UK first worldwide to approve Oxford-Astrazeneca COVID-19 vaccine

The United Kingdom has officially approved the use of the vaccine against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) created by Oxford University and AstraZeneca.

UK is now the first in the world to approve the said vaccine, marking a turning point for the country’s fight against the spread – especially with the new coronavirus strain that appeared in the country.

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock hopes that the approval of the vaccine would spark hope among UK residents, stating that the vaccine which has an average effectivity rate of 70%, will begin to be rolled out to the public by January 4, 2021.

“Brilliant to end 2020 with such a moment of hope. The coronavirus vaccine is our way out of the pandemic – now we need to hold our nerve while we get through this together,” said Hancock via Twitter.

Around 100 million doses will be available for the public. With an allotment of two shots per person, UK’s vaccination program will benefit approximately 50 million individuals.
