Duterte to decide on new quarantine status ahead of Christmas holidays

President Rodrigo Duterte will announce a new community quarantine classifications in the country on Monday, November 30.

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Ano said they will be meeting with the President to discuss the new set of classifications.

“Ang Pangulo na rin ang magde-decide at mag-a-announce ng bagong quarantine classification para sa iba’t ibang areas at LGUs,” Año told GMA News.

Metro Manila and six other areas are still under the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) for the entire month of November.

Metro Manila mayors have expressed the need to retain the GCQ classification in Manila due to the possible influx of people for Christmas holidays.

“Kailangan pakinggan din natin yung kanilang opinyon at ang kanilang rekomendasyon. Gayunpaman, actually, nakapag-usap usap na rin naman ang ating mga mayor, at sa kanila, patapusin natin ang Christmas under GCQ,” he added.

Experts from the University of the Philippines (UP) recommend keeping Metro Manila under general community quarantine (GCQ) until the end of 2020 amid a recent jump in COVID-19 cases.

Professor Guido David of the UP Octa Research team said Sunday that the government can’t let its guard down as COVID-19 cases in the country are expected to increase due to the holiday season.

“It’s very possible na kung magkaroon ng increase, yung 400 cases per day natin pwedeng maging 800 or 1,000 cases per day by the end of December. I don’t have the total pero yan yung estimated projection natin,” he said in an online forum.
