P2.5-B fund for OFW cash assistance nearly exhausted—DOLE

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Tuesday said it has almost exhausted the P2.5-billion funds for its Abot Kamay ang Pagtulong (AKAP) one-time cash assistance program for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said their foreign and regional offices had disbursed a total of P2.324 billion to 226,714 land-based and sea-based OFWs, as of August 2.

The agency has so far approved assistance requests of 261,543 OFWs but the P2.5 billion DOLE AKAP fund is only meant to be disbursed among 250,000 beneficiaries.

Meanwhile, Bello said in a statement that government has sent to the respective provinces more than 120,000 returning OFWs.

“We will not get tired of assisting our returning OFWs and facilitate their transport to the provinces and be with their families. This is just a small way to repay their enormous contribution to our country,” Bello said.
