Saudi schools to introduce Chinese language

Saudi Arabia has decided to introduce Chinese language gradually to its schools as an option for students, newspapers have reported.
Chinese lessons will begin next month in 8 schools in the capital Riyadh and other cities, they said, quoting Education Ministry spokeswoman Ibtissam Al Shahri.
“For now, Chinese language will be an optional subject for students and will be enforced at 8 boys schools,” she said.
“This is the first phase of a plan that includes the introduction of Chinese language to most schools in the Kingdom, including girls’ schools.”
The decision follows the signing of several agreements in education, culture, industry, investment and other sectors during a visit to China in early 2019 by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
