Kuwaiti labour official sentenced to life for human trafficking

A Kuwaiti court sentenced a Labour Ministry official to life in prison after he was convicted of involvement in human trafficking.

Police arrested the head of the manpower division and charged him of bringing thousands of expatriates, mainly Asians, to Kuwait in return for money.

Newspapers said the unnamed official was accused of bringing tens of thousands of expatriates on labour visas for a company owned by the defendant.

Police arrested the man after they were contacted by some Asian embassies, who said that a number of their citizens have complained that they paid at least $5,000 to the defendant for labour visas but that they were not given any job.

“The odd thing is that the defendant has kept tweeted in the past years criticizing the Labour Ministry for not being firm enough towards the influx of foreign labour,” the Arabic language daily Al Anba said.
