In its bid to support Saudi Arabia’s goal of becoming green, the Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah took part in a coastal clean-up drive organized by Philippine Professional Organization in the Western Region, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (PPO-WRSA) last October 18.
The clean-up drive was conducted along the stretch of the Buhairat Public Beach in Obhur on from 6 to 9 AM. It was participated by around 30 Jeddah-based Filipinos from various professions, including medical doctors, dentists, architects, engineers, and nurses, as well as more than a dozen personnel from the Consulate.
Consulate contingent head Atty. Chares Marie R. Torres-Elacion lauded the participants for taking part in the activity, encouraging everyone at the drive to say to each other the terms “Mabuhay Ka, Kabayan” for exemplifying their compassion for the environment. She added, “It feels good to connect with each other during this time as it is when we are with nature.”
The head noted that since plastic use became widespread, a substantial amount of it ends up as a marine litter. This is why she urged the volunteers to promote the importance of clean-up drives and raise awareness about the dangers of single-plastic use. “Make cleaning the environment a habit without waiting for someone to do so,” she said.
