Saudi considers allowing women to join pilgrimage without male guardians

As part of its Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia is looking into granting women the right to join Hajj and Umrah without male supervision.

Citing an article from Makkah daily, Saudi Gazette reported that The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah is now considering cancelling the Mahram (male guardian) condition for Muslim women as a requirement for them to join Umrah and Hajj pilgrimage.

According to Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI)’s Haj and Umrah committee chairman Marwan Shaaban, the move was discussed during a meeting with Minister of Haj and Umrah Mohammed Saleh Benten, Deputy Minister Abdul Fattah Mashshat, investors in the Haj and Umrah sectors, hoteliers, and many other concerned officials.

The minister, Shaaban said, agreed to look into cancellation of Mahram condition for women to be granted Umrah visas.

Other things they have discussed in the meeting included the future of electronic tourist visas for Umrah meeting, as well as the efforts various sectors are doing to effectively contribute to the Vision 2030.
