Court acquits woman who tortured maid

A Kuwaiti court of appeals acquitted a national woman who was earlier sentenced to three years and four months in prison on charges of torturing her Asian housemaid.

Medical reports showed that the woman allegedly used various tools to burn and beat her maid over a period of several years during her work for her in the capital Kuwait City.

A criminal court earlier convicted the woman and sentenced her to jail, prompting her to appeal the verdict.

Newspapers said the judge at the court of appeals decided to acquit the woman after her lawyer argued that there was contradictions in police evidence and the tools used by the employer to torture her maid.

“She was acquitted although medical reports showed that the maid suffered serious burns and bruises in the head and other parts of her body,” Alanba daily said.
