4 nabbed for trying to smuggle millions of money out of Saudi

Four passengers were caught separately trying to smuggle a total amount SR4 million out of Saudi Arabia, Saudi Gazette reported.

The passengers about to fly out of the kingdom were separately nabbed at Prince Muhammad International Airport in Madinah after authorities have seen the bank notes in their baggage, all in all totalling an amount of SR3.93 million.

The first passenger caught had a total of SR948,300 hidden inside clothes in his baggage. The second one was caught when authorities discovered SR679,000 from his baggage. The third one had SR415,000 hidden in metal cans.

The latest incident was another passenger attempting to smuggle out currency notes worth SR1.05 million through conceling it in the jeans trousers.

The kingdom’s Anti-Money Laundering Law states that passengers carrying cash or valuables worth more than SR60,000 must declare it at the Customs. Failing to do it results in legal accountability.

The airport Director General Ahmed Al-Ghamdi, in an interview with Saudi Gazette, said that all the smugglers failed to prove the legitimacy of the sources of these amounts of money seized from them.
