UN thanks Bahrain crown prince for human rights efforts

United Nations Migration Agency expressed appreciation for His Royal Highness Bahrain Prince Salman bin Samad Al Khalifa over his efforts to lower human trafficking and protecting expat rights, Bahrain News Agency reported

The Crown Prince, who is also the kingdom’s Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, received on Tuesday a cable of thanks from UN Migration Agency Director-General Antonio Vitorino.

Vitorino noted the organization’s gratitude for the Crown Prince’s efforts that contributed to the success of Bahrain maintaining its Tier 1 status in the United States State Department’s 2019 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report.

The TIP report is an analysis that divides nations into tiers based on their compliance with standards outlined in the US Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) of 2000. Countries with Tier 1 status are those whose governments fully comply with the TVPA’s minimum standards.

Bahrain has been awarded the status for two consecutive years, and it is the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to achieve it.

Vitorino also praised the ongoing cooperation between Bahrain and the UN Migration Agency for combating human trafficking and protecting the expat rights.

Among the expats living in Bahrain, around 40,000 of them are Filipinos.
