Sandstorms hit Riyadh

Warnings were issued by Saudi authorities as sandstorms hit Riyadh and other areas in Saudi Arabia including Al-Jouf, Northern Borders, Qassim regions, Eastern Province and Najran.

A wind speed of 31 kph resulting to low visibility was recorded on Monday, which caused heavy traffic disruptions in the affected areas.

The General Authority for Meteorology and Environmental Protection, Saudi Arabia’s government agency tasked in the field of environmental protection activities and meteorology, also warned eastern parts of Saudi and the Makkah and Madinah regions to expect sand particles stirred up by strong winds. Thunderstorms are also expected in the areas of Jazan, Asir, Taif, and Baha.

Motorists are advised to drive slowly and use their headlights to avoid vehicle collisions.

Meanwhile, residents in the affected areas are advised to stay indoors as sandstorms can cause breathing problems, especially people who already have existing respiratory issues.
