Indonesia Tsunami: Death toll rises to 429; 16,000 displaced

Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency has reported that 429 people have been confirmed dead following the tsunami that was caused by Anak Krakatau volcano.

In a report from BBC, more than 16,000 individuals have been displaced by the most devastating tsunami of the year in Indonesia – with 150 people still missing from the moment the tsunami waves crashed into the islands of Java and Sumatra last Saturday.

Reports speculate that the volcanic activity triggered several undersea landslides that caused the killer waves to crash into Indonesian coasts.

On Monday, a spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency told a news conference that another tsunami was a possibility because of the continued volcanic eruptions of Anak Krakatau.

“Recommendations from [the] Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency are that people should not carry out activities on the beach and stay away from the coast for a while,” said spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

As per a report from DFA earlier, all Filipinos residing in Indonesia were marked safe from tsunami.

As of press time, rescue efforts still continue but are heavily obstructed by road blocks. However – heavy lifting equipment are also being transported to devastated areas as the search for survivors continues.
